Supplicatory Canon

The Supplicatory Canon

to our Venerable Father among the Saints

Prohor of Pčinja, the Myrrh Gusher

After the blessing of the priest, we begin:

Psalm 1421 (1432)

1 O Lord, attend to my prayer: hearken to my supplication in your truth; hear me in your righteousness.

2 Do not enter into judgment with your servant, for in your sight shall no man living be justified.

3 For the enemy has persecuted my soul; he has brought my life down to the ground; he has made me to dwell in a dark place, as those who have been long dead.

4 Therefore my spirit was grieved in me; my heart was troubled within me.

5 I remembered the days of old; and I meditated on all your doings: yes, I meditated on the works of your hands.

6 I spread forth my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you, as a dry land.

7 Hear me speedily, O Lord; my spirit has failed; turn not away your face from me, else I shall be like to those who go down to the pit.

8 Cause me to hear your mercy in the morning; for I have hoped in you; make known to me, O Lord, the way by which I should walk; for I have lifted up my soul to you.

9 Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord; for I have fled to you for refuge.

10 Teach me to do your will; for you are my God; your good Spirit shall guide me in the straight way.

11 You shall revive me, O Lord, for your names sake; in your righteousness you shall bring my soul out of affliction.

12 In your mercy you will destroy my enemies and destroy all those who afflict my soul, for I am your servant.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, glory to You, O God (3).

Our hope, O Lord, Glory to You.

God is the Lord3 (Tone 1)

God is the Lord and has revealed Himself to us; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

O give thanks to the Lord and call upon His holy name.

God is the Lord and has revealed Himself to us; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

All the nations have surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I have overcome them.

God is the Lord and has revealed Himself to us; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

This has been done by the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes.

God is the Lord and has revealed Himself to us; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Troparion4 (Tone 1)

A desert dweller, an angel in the flesh, and a wonderworker were you shown to be, O our God-bearing father Prohor, for having acquired heavenly gifts through fasting, vigilance, and prayer, you heal the infirm and the souls of those who have recourse to you with faith. Glory to Him Who has given you strength! Glory to Him Who has crowned you! Glory to Him Who works healings for all through you!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Theotokion

We the unworthy ones will never cease, O Theotokos, to speak of Your wonders because if You would not intercede for us, who would redeem us from so many miseries? Who would have kept us free till now? We will not depart from You, our Queen, because You always preserve us from all dangers.

Psalm 501 (512)

1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to your great mercy; according to the multitude of your compassions blot out my transgression.

2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I am conscious of my iniquity; and my sin is continually before me.

4 Against you alone have I sinned and done evil before you: that you might be justified in your sayings and overcome in your judgments.

5 For, behold, I was conceived in iniquities and in sins did my mother conceive me.

6 For, behold, you love truth: you have manifested to me the secret and hidden things of your wisdom.

7 You shall sprinkle me with hyssop and I shall be purified: you shall wash me and I shall be made whiter than snow.

8 You shall cause me to hear gladness and joy: the afflicted bones shall rejoice.

9 Turn away your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit in my inner being.

11 Do not cast me away from your presence; and do not remove your holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation: establish me with your guiding Spirit.

13 Then will I teach transgressors your ways; and ungodly men shall return to you.

14 Deliver me from blood guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation: then my tongue shall joyfully declare your righteousness.

15 O Lord, you shall open my lips; and my mouth shall declare your praise.

16 If you desired sacrifice, I would have given it: you will not take pleasure in whole-burnt-offerings.

17 Sacrifice to God is a broken spirit: a broken and humbled heart God will not despise.

18 Do good, O Lord, to Zion in your good pleasure; Let the walls of Jerusalem be rebuilt.

19 Then shall you be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, With offering and whole-burnt sacrifices: then shall they offer calves upon your altar.

Canon (Tone 2)

Ode 1

Eirmos In the deep of old the infinite Power overwhelmed Pharaoh's whole army. But the incarnate Word annihilated pernicious sin. Exceedingly glorious is the Lord, for gloriously has he been glorified.

O Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

With the eternal triple-sunned radiance you now shine with the angels and heavenly lights, standing before the All-Effulgent Creator, cast out the darkness from my heart, O Father Prohor, that I would brightly sing of the glory of your life.

O Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

Having acquired a deep desire in your soul for the countless beauties of Christ, O Father, you have closed all the doors of the senses leading to that which is decaying and, and by your many labors, attaining to your true desire.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

The great providence of God illumined you from your mothers womb, revealing you to be a vessel of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, from your youth have you been encircled by the fear of God.

Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Theotokion Revealing yourself to be a participant in the most awesome mysteries, and uniting into one the two divided natures, begetting the incorporeal God in yourself, you bore the One Who became incarnate in one hypostasis and two natures, O most-pure one, who bore Immanuel.

Ode 3

Eirmos By establishing me on the rock of faith, You have enlarged my mouth over mine enemies, and my spirit rejoices when I sing: There is none holy as our God, and none righteous beside You, O Lord.

O Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

With the eyes of your spirit awakened, you saw that all is vanity, cutting yourself off from all the beauty of this world, giving to the poor your possessions so as to gain a treasure incorruptible.

O Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

Being obedient to the divine commandments, in silence you dwelt throughout your life. As one useless and devoid of honor in your homeland, and subjected to great reproach, you thus nourished yourself with the desire for true glory.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

Having turned your back on the world, you lifted your eyes to the heavens looking for divine help. Therefore, from His holy mountain, you heard God, and He wonderfully exalted you.

Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Theotokion The God of our fathers sings to the Virgin: incline Your ears, O Daughter of the King, look upon a sinful people and hear the cry of those who magnify You.

Troparion

Save your servants from misery, O Venerable Father Prohor, for, after God, we all look to you as a strong and fervent intercessor.

Most glorious Theotokos, look with compassion on the painful suffering of my body and heal the affliction of my soul.

Ode 4

Eirmos From a virgin You did come, not as an ambassador, nor as an Angel, but the very Lord Himself incarnate, and did save me, the whole man. Wherefore I cry to You: Glory to Your power, O Lord.

O Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

Summoned by the LORD from Zion, as our forefather Abraham of old, to depart from your fatherland, you, with endurance, obeyed His words, O Father Prohor.

Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

With your feet, you have established the light of the law. Therefore, your justice has gone forth as light and your righteousness has shone like the noonday sun, Father.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

With sackcloth as your clothing, you mortified the passions, O Father, bravely transfiguring them into vesture most radiant.

Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Theotokion David likened you, O glorified one, unto a dove with silver wings and gilded fleece. Shelter and deliver me from the arrows that fly by day and by night.

Ode 5

Eirmos O You Who are the Light of those lying in darkness, and the salvation of the despairing, O Christ my Savior, I rise early to pray to You, O King of Peace. Enlighten me with Your radiance, for I know none other God beside You.

Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

Setting a snare to hinder your souls ascent, the devil wished to frighten you by transforming himself into a serpent. Yet, arming yourself with the sign of the Cross, O Father, you crushed his head under your feet.

O Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

Your tomb revealed itself as a spring of healings, O our Venerable Father Prohor. Flowing with fragrant myrrh, it grants healing of diverse maladies to those who in faith pray to you and honor you with love.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

You fulfilled the law of Christ and, giving no heed to your food and clothing, you became like the birds of the air and settled in a cave for life, O Venerable one.

Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Theotokion More magnificent than the Cedars of Lebanon, You are the fertile mountain that shields the ends of the earth with divine virtues; the Stone not made by hands proceeded from You and destroyed the idols of my passions, O Virgin, and strengthened my soul.

Ode 6

Eirmos Whirled about in the abyss of sin, I appeal to the unfathomable abyss of Your compassion: From corruption raise me up, O God.

O Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

You gave no sleep to your eyes, O blessed Prohor, nor slumber to your eyelids until you found a habitation with the righteous, prepared by God for those who love Him.

O Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

With your heartfelt prayers and self-control throughout your earthly sojourn, O Father Prohor, you pleased the Lord and became one whom the demons feared and the people honored.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

Always looking toward the heavenly life and the joy of the saints, O Venerable Father Prohor, you lived your whole life in tears and sighs. After death, therefore, Christ glorified you through your wonderworking.

Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Theotokion Deliver me from a deceitful tongue, diseases, temptations, troubles, and sorrows, O merciful Theotokos, and grant joy to my heart.

Troparion

Save your servants from misery, O Venerable Father Prohor, for, after God, we all look to you as a strong and fervent intercessor.

Priest That we may be made worthy of hearing the Holy Gospel, let us pray to the Lord.

The Holy Gospel

Priest Wisdom! Arise! Let us hear the holy Gospel. Peace unto all!

And with your spirit.

Deacon The reading is from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew.

Priest Let us be attentive!

St Matthew 113

27All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and the one to whom the Son desires to reveal him.

28 Come to me, all of you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest!

29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me because I am gentle and humble of heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

30 Indeed, my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

By the prayers of our holy Father Prohor, O Merciful One, blot out the multitude of our transgressions.

Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

By the prayers of the Theotokos, O Merciful One, blot out the multitude of our transgressions.

Have mercy, O Lord, according to your great mercy and by the multitude of your compassions, blot out my transgression.

Stichera (Tone 6)

Prayerful chanting, we offer now to our God-bearing Father. Come, O ye people, and bow down before the honorable grave of his relics and from the depths of our hearts, let us cry out to him: O Christ-pleasing Father Prohor, do not abandon us, your children, do not despise our small hymn which we offer you from our unworthy lips, but receive our prayer as we are in great troubles and heavy sadness surrounds us because of the multitude of evil. Send help from above and with your prayers to God deliver us from temptation, O Father, all-blessed and worthy of honor.

Priest (in a low voice) O Lord, save Your people and bless Your inheritance. Protect the fullness of Your Church. Sanctify those who love the beauty of Your house. Glorify them in return by Your divine power and forsake not those who have set their hope in You.

Priest (exclaims) For You, O God, are good and love mankind, and to You we offer glory, to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages.

Ode 7

Eirmos When the golden image was worshipped in the plain of Dura, Your three children despised the godless order. Thrown into the fire, they were bedewed and sang: Blessed are You, O God of our fathers.

O Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

With fasting and heart-felt prayer and with many warm tears and no thought for material possessions, you adorned your spiritual home, O Father Prohor, attracting the grace of God which dwelt within you and filled the church with His gifts through you.

O Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

You vanquished the endless demonic deceits, O Father Prohor, and travelled the narrow path without stumbling, O worker of spiritual exploits; you have been found to be pleasing to God and from Him received an incorruptible crown, and, like a spring of light, became a source of wonders.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

Your Divine tomb and relics are an ancient paradise of fragrance to those who draw nigh to you. More than any sweet scent, you sweeten the hearts and senses of all, O Venerable One, revealing your noetic gifts.

Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Theotokion A virgin in mind and body, the God of Ages found none holier than You, desired Your goodness, and dwelt in You, O Virgin, having received a body from your immaculate blood and dwelt among those on the earth.

Ode 8

Eirmos O you works, praise the Lord God, Who descended into the fiery furnace with the Hebrew children and changed the flame into dew, and supremely exalt Him unto all ages.

O Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

Mortifying your flesh with ascetic struggles, you amazed even the angelic hosts who prepared the bright and Holy habitation in which you were received when you fell asleep upon the earth.

O Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

Your virginal body, hidden in the ground, O Prohor, reveals divine gifts and miracles to the faithful, offering springs of grace to all who supplicate you.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

By your words, pray to the Word who was begotten of God, and to the Divine Spirit, who proceeded from the Father, so that our God and Lord, glorious by nature, always may be praised.

Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

O Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

God has revealed you as a source of miracles to the church divine, not to but a few as He did of old to the Israelites at the pool by the Sheep Gate, but to an innumerable multitude who draw near to you for healing, O Blessed Prohor.

O Holy Father Prohor, pray to God for us!

You became worthy of life incorruptible in the Kingdom of Heaven and of gazing upon what the angels see. As one asleep in an eternal dream in the tomb, you have shown yourself alive and incorruptible, O Blessed Prohor

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

We who with words according to our strength and from the heart, entreat your grace from above; for every good intention, grant us grace from above, O Praised One, for you are a rich spring of miracles.

Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Theotokion You are the ladder of heaven; You are the golden candlestick; You are the vessel and the table. From the earth to the heavens transfer me, and with the brightness of the Sun enlighten me. Sweeten the bitterness of my soul with the bread divine; nourish me and strengthen my heart, O pure one, so I can glorify you forever.

Axion Estin3

It is truly right to bless You, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption You gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify You, the true Theotokos.

Ode (Tone 5)

With songs we honor Prohor, an earthly angel and heavenly dweller, ever standing in the light with the angelic hosts before the throne of the Most Holy Trinity.

From the great multitude of my sins, ill I am in body; ill I am in soul. I flee to you, O Sweet One, praying: save me, the poor one, that I may not perish.

Speedily receive the prayers from our lips and the tears from your unworthy servants, and to the most-sweet God unceasingly pray for us, O blessed Father Prohor, pleasing to God.

Now we all eagerly sing to you, O blessed Prohor, and we cry: deliver us from trouble and help us who celebrate your memory with honor.

With the hosts of the Angels, God's messengers, with the Forerunner of the Lord, with the Apostles, the chosen twelve, with the saints, most holy, and with the Theotokos; we seek Your intercession for our salvation.

As sinners we offer this supplication to You;
O Master, have mercy on us.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Lord, have mercy on us,
For in You we have put our trust;
Be not exceedingly angry with us,

But look upon us now as the Compassionate,
And deliver us from our enemies;
For You are our God, and we Your people,
We are all the work of Your hands,
And upon Your Name we have now called.

Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Troparion4 (Tone 1)

A desert dweller, an angel in the flesh, and a wonderworker were you shown to be, O our God-bearing father Prohor, for having acquired heavenly gifts through fasting, vigilance, and prayer, you did heal the infirm and the souls of those who have recourse to you with faith. Glory to Him Who hath given you strength! Glory to Him Who hath crowned you! Glory to Him Who works healings for all through you!

Kontakion (Tone 4)

Burning with divine love, you have bravely gained great victory, despising the earthly kingdoms and inhabiting a remote mountain. For this, you have been exalted to the heavenly kingdom of the King of Kings, O Prohor, pray to God for us.

Prayer to St. Prohor

Our venerable father, Prohor, we pray to you who served our Lord Jesus Christ all of your life and lived more than thirty years in a cave seeing no human face. You chose the narrow path because of Christs love. Before you, we fall on our knees and beg for your fervent intercessions.

You found us, O Holy Father, before we found you; you have loved us more then we have loved you, so we pray to you: give us grace from the life-giving spring that we may serve our Lord Jesus Christ with all our hearts, with all our souls, and with all the days of our lives.

Make our hearts burn with the fire of love for God and neighbor so that we may not be deceived by the spirit of this world and so that we may remain faithful to God, to you, to our holy faith, and to our holy ancestors. And in so doing, we may offer the fruit of patience and repentance to God for ourselves, for our neighbors, and for the entire suffering world.

We pray to you who spared not yourself: grant to us the gift of renouncing the world, so we may live this life according to the measure of Christ.

You who suffered pain in this world in the cruel conditions of a cave, heal the wounds of our sins and the sickness of our souls by your prayers, so we can repent, be renewed in Christ, and know Him with all of our souls in joy in the midst of the troubles of this life.

You who stand before the Throne of God, look upon us who love and pray to you: pray to God to grant us the assurance of the forgiveness of ours sins.

Guide us on the path of love and self-sacrifice according to the pattern of your holy life. Protect our homeland and keep our consciences pure before God, so even if we have to suffer, may it be on the path to God.

Together with Ss. Simeon and Sava, Holy King Milutin, and Tsar Lazar of Kosovo, and with all holy souls of the Serbian land, the heroes of Pčinja, the abbot, the hierarchs (priests) and monks, soldiers and their leaders who sacrificed themselves for the faith, also together with our Holy Father Justin of Ćelije and Vranje: pray for us, the sinful and weak that we may together with all of you find ourselves in everlasting communion with Christ.

O our venerable father, Prohor, how many times have we fallen on our knees before you without being honest, without a tear of repentance or a word of confession. How often we lie to God with our lives, and this, without any repentance.

Though you are with us, it seems like you are not, for we have put you aside with our sinful lives. But you do not abandon us as we deserve. Instead, according to the multitude of your love, you come to our rescue.

You, the bridge to the Kingdom of God, come and pull us from the mire of this world. You, the gate of eternal joy, come and pull us from this valley of tears.

You, the river of the grace of Christ, the one through whom myrrh flows to the entire world, o come and renew us in Christ!

O great adornment of the Church of Christ, we your servants pray: do not abandon us, your children, but always be with us that we may not be ashamed.

Pray to God to strengthen us that we may endure the path trodden by our fathers who followed Christ.

O grant us the strength to belong to Him with our entire lives, to live for Him, and to die for Him because He is the only true joy, path, truth and life, to Whom be glory together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen!
